Youthful Grizzlies outlast Alumni, 4-1

ALAMOSA, Colo.— The Adams State College alumni team put up quite a fight but ultimately succumbed to the youth of the current team as the 2009 Grizzlies posted a four sets to one victory in the second annual ASC Volleyball Alumni match, Saturday night in Plachy Hall.
The alumni, made up of 13 of some of the best players in ASC history, won the second set 25-21 and nearly took the overall lead as they erased three of the four necessary set points in the third before the 2009 Grizzlies won the set 25-23 while going on to 25-13 and 15-10 wins in the fourth and fifth sets, respectively.
The Grizzlies, who just one senior, and seven true freshmen, five of which played, also claimed the first set by a 25-18 win.
One of the freshmen, Callyn Weyenberg (Chandler, Ariz.) delivered the death blows in both the first and third sets putting down kills to end each. Senior Darcy Jennings-Calkins (Lakin, Kan.), playing against her older sister Megan, then closed out the nearly 2-hour match in the fifth as the Grizzlies went on a 7-2 run to close out the match.
They also had a big 10-3 run to win the first set after the opener had been tied at 15.
The second set was just as close and was tied at 17 before the alumni went on a 8-4 run, capped by a dump-kill from alumni setter Monica Garcia-Ashley, ranked second on ASC’s all-time assists charts with 3,489 career assists, to claim the set and even the match.
The third set was also close early on before a 5-0 run by the 2009 Grizzlies gave them a 19-13 lead.
The alumni team cut into the deficit slightly and pulled within 23-20 before Weyenberg kill gave the current Grizzlies four set points at 24-20.
Back-to-back blocks helped the alumni close to within 24-23 before Weyenberg’s next kill put the Grizzlies on the path for victory.
Grizzly head coach Lindy Mortensen experimented with different lineups throughout the night as 14 players saw action in preparation for the regular season that begins Friday at the Holiday Inn Denver West Village Oredigger Volleyball Classic to be hosted by the Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
