Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— For the second time in a week, the Cameron (Okla.) University Aggies swept the Adams State College volleyball team. This time, the 32-30, 30-17, 30-25 match came at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs AmeriSuites Mountain Lion Invitational Friday evening in The Lions’ Den.

Cameron, which had also posted a 3-game sweep over Angelo State (Texas) earlier in the day, improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the classic-style tournament. ASC, which had dropped a 3-game match to the Aggies last Saturday at the West Texas A&M GrapevineWoods.com Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas, fell to 2-4 in what has been an up and down season thus far. The Grizzlies had posted a 3-1 win over St. Mary’s (Texas) earlier Friday.

Cameron junior outside hitter Ashley Rikard and freshman middle blocker Alysha Pritt led the way with 15 kills each. Rikard, who had a match-high 11 kills in last week’s match, also hit .263 with 18 digs while Pritt hit .333 with a match-high five blocks, leading Cameron to a 8-4 advantage in that category. Aggie setter Vicki Ibarra had 38 assists.

Sophomores Brittany Whiteley (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) and Lindsey Clason (Pueblo West, Colo.) led the Grizzlies. Whiteley, who put down 18 kills in the afternoon win over St. Mary’s had 11 more kills. Clason had 36 assists and a match and career-high 20 digs to record her first career double-double. Senior middle blocker Megan Jennings (Lakin, Kan.) added another nine kills, three service aces all while hitting .304. Seniors Emily Bussey (Alamosa, Colo.) and Jocelyn Garcia (Albuquerque, N.M.) chipped in 18 and 14 digs, respectively.

The first game was by far the most interesting. The teams were tied on 14 occasions and the lead changed hands nine times. Tied at 21, the Grizzlies went on a 6-2 run to take a 27-23 lead on a Whiteley kill. However the Aggies came back to tie the set at 28 before a Pritt kill, one of five in the game, gave the Aggies a game point.

After a Grizzly timeout, Pritt and Aubrey Birkholtz each committed miscues as the Grizzlies reversed the deficit. However, back-to-back Grizzly errors followed by a Pritt kill gave Cameron the early 1-0 edge.

The Aggies used that momentum and used an 8-1 run to take a 14-7 lead in game two. The Grizzlies never fully recovered as they hit at a negative .036 clip en-route to Cameron’s easy win.

ASC never led in the third game but did tie the set five times before a 3-0 run triggered a Pritt kill gave Cameron an 18-15 lead. Sophomore Brittany Muchmore (Peoria, Ariz.) cut the deficit to two with an immediate kill. However, ASC would get no closer as two Pritt kills and a match-ending block by Pritt and Ibarra closed the door.

ASC hit just .032 on the night and committed 37 attacking errors. The Grizz did record eight service aces, three more than the Aggies.

They will face Angelo State in their final match of the tournament on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
