Sanchez, Mercer make men's soccer history on RMAC All-Academic squad
Grizzly men get first ever RMAC All-Academic accolades
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Led by Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) All-Academic Second Team selection Raul Sanchez (Alliance, Neb.), as well as Honor Roll pick Johnny Mercer (Longmont, Colo.), the Adams State men’s soccer had their first ever selections to league academic all-conference team on Tuesday.
To be eligible for Academic All-RMAC, a student-athlete must possess a GPA of 3.30 or better, be a starter or reserve, and completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution. First and second team honors were voted on by Sports Information Directors at each league school that sponsors men’s soccer.
Sanchez, a junior defender/midfielder for the Grizzlies, earned second team honors with a 3.86 cumulative GPA in math education. Sanchez has played and started in nine of the Grizzlies’ 11 games this season, and helped anchor the ASC defense as they recorded the program’s first ever shutout in a 4-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin on Sept. 9.
Mercer, a redshirt freshman with a 3.32 GPA in physics/pre-engineering, leads the Grizzlies in goals this season with three, matching the Grizzlies individual season record. With an assist as well this season, Mercer’s seven points is also just one point shy of matching the individual season record in that category.
His two goals scored UT-Permian Basin on Sept. 9 are also an ASC men’s soccer record for most goals in a game.
