Grizzlies at home for weekend matches with Regis, UCCS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Click here to view the eighth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) men’s soccer release of the 2011 season. Tuesday’s release includes league standings, RMAC Players of the Week, recent results, upcoming matches, news & notes from around the conference and a look at the national polls.
The Grizzlies split a pair of weekend matches at ASC Soccer Field last weekend, topping Colorado Christian on Friday before falling to No. 23 Colorado Mines, 3-0, on Sunday.
ASC’s win over CCU set a program record for most RMAC wins in a season, and was also the Grizzlies’ third straight against the Cougars. With their third win of the season, the Grizzlies continued to improve upon their best season in the program’s short history and now stand at 3-9-1 overall and 2-8 in the RMAC.
Freshman Cody Sprouse (Albuquerque, N.M.) matched the Grizzlies’ single-game record with two goals in the 3-2 win over the Cougars. The goals were the first of his career. Redshirt-freshman Johnny Mercer (Longmont, Colo.) then came up with the game-winner in the match for his fourth of the season, establishing a new single-season record for goals scored.
Mercer again made history on Sunday, as the Grizzlies outshot the Orediggers 17-16, recording school records for both shots (7) and shots on goal (5).
With just four games remaining in the 2011 season, Adams State will play three of them at home. Friday and Sunday ASC will take on the Nos. 4 and 5 teams in the RMAC standings, beginning with Regis (9-3-1, 6-3-1 RMAC) at 3 p.m. Friday, and UC-Colorado Springs (8-7, 6-5 RMAC) on Sunday. The Rangers are currently receiving votes in the latest in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings.
Fans unable to make the trip to ASC Soccer Field for the weekend’s action can follow all the action via live stats.
