Both the Grizzlies’ men’s and women’s squads got their seasons underway last weekend, taking part in the Colorado Mines hosted Rocky Mountain Shootout in Golden, Colo., on Saturday.
Saturday’s action was the first intercollegiate competition for all of the ASC men, and saw the squad set eight new school records. Freshman Nick Mankus (Keller, Texas) set three Grizzly records while Luis Solis (El Paso, Texas) grabbed two as an individual. Mankus also accounted for ASC’s top finishes of the meet, placing third and earning 16 team points in both the 100 and 200 yard butterfly.
The women were led by sophomore Jennell Higgs (Socorro, N.M.), the lone returner from last year’s team. Higgs swam to two ASC records, recorded an individual first place finish in the 200 yard butterfly, and helped the 400 medley relay to top honors. Freshman Jordan Shomaker (Littleton, Colo.) was also an event winner for the Grizzlies, taking the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 11 minutes, 55.26 seconds.
With one college experience under their belts, the Grizzlies are now getting ready for their next action. The Grizzlies will kick-off a 3-day swing next Wednesday and Thursday in Nebraska, where the women will swim duals against Nebraska-Kearney and Morningside (Iowa) on both days while the men compete against Morningside. ASC will also make a stop at the Air Force Duals at USAFA, Colo. on Friday.
