Baker named as RMAC West Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Adams State College senior Greg Baker (Lewisville, Texas) was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Baden West Division Player of the Week for the first time in his career by conference officials, Monday. Nebraska-Kearney’s Dusta Jura earned the award for the East Division.
Baker, a 6-foot-4 guard, scored 42 points with eight rebounds and seven assists as the Grizzlies split a pair of RMAC road games over the weekend. He made 17 of 28 shots (60.7 percent) from the floor and was 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from 3-point territory in the two games.
On Friday, Baker matched a career-high by scoring 22 points while grabbing a career-high seven rebounds against Colorado Christian in Lakewood. He then scored 20 points while hitting all three of his 3-point attempts in a 60-55 win over Colorado Mines Saturday night in Golden. Baker also had two steals and a game-high sharing four assists in that victory, ASC’s fifth of the young season. The last of those assists came on Roman Moniak’s (Sacramento, Calif.) game-winning 3-pointer with just 14.3 seconds left against the Orediggers.
Baker, a 2002 Lewisville High School graduate, is averaging 16.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game this season and has led the team lead in scoring in six of the team’s eight games. Baker also leads the team with 31 assists, a 3.88 per game average, and is second in steals with 10, a 1.25 per game mark. He ranks seventh in the RMAC in scoring and assists and is ranked in the top 25 in numerous other categories.
He has now scored 20 or more points four times in his Grizzly career since transferring from North Lake Junior College prior to the 2004-05 season. Baker is the first Grizzly since Feb. 17, 2004 (Brandon Brochinsky) to win the weekly RMAC honor.
The Grizzlies have won four of their last five games and currently stand with a 5-3 overall mark heading into a Monday night game at Division I Utah. ASC is 3-1 in RMAC action, good for second place in the West Division and fourth place overall in the 14-team league.
