Division I standout named softball graduate assistant coach

ALAMOSA, Colo.— Recent University of Maryland graduate Alex Schultz has been named to the Adams State College softball coaching staff as a graduate assistant, head coach Dervin Taylor announced earlier this week.

“I am excited to be here,” said Schultz. “I am ready to help the program in any way I can and especially to work with 'Coach D'.  His style is one I am used to and it’s going to be a good adjustment from playing.”

“She is going to be a valuable asset for us,” said Taylor. “She used to play for me so she knows what I expect from her and she will be very loyal.”

Schultz, who recently finished her playing career for the Terrapins with many accolades, joins Taylor after playing for him during her high school days on the QuickSilver traveling softball team.

“I owe a lot to 'Coach D' and the QuickSilver team because that’s what got me noticed,” said Schultz. “I got recruited to play at the college level because of travel ball.”

Schultz, who helped the Terps finish 34-24 while hosting a NCAA Division I regional tournament for the first time in school history, finished her senior year as the team leader in many statistical categories including hits (62) and batting average (.378). In addition, Schultz led the team in doubles (13), home runs (8), and RBI (36) and was the only member of the squad to play in all 58 games of the season, starting each at third base.

Also leading the team with 16 multiple-hit games while recording a team-best 13-game hitting streak, Schultz was named a Division I All-Star by the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 2010. Also in 2010, Schultz was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s First Team and to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Second Team. Her .378 batting average was good enough for her to finish in second in the ACC statistics. [+]
